The design brief was: “a nehru jacket made out of pure Irish linen.” Too often, linen suit jackets come lined, often in synthetic fabrics, which detract from the breezy, breathable qualities of linen. Linen is special: it has structure, but also softness, qualities which lend themselves to unlined, semi-formal garments.
And yet, the rationale behind lining a linen jacket is perfectly valid: to ensure a clean internal finish so that pocket bags don’t flap around under the hood. Visible pocket bags work wonderfully for some garments, but for this linen blazer, we were uncompromising about a pristine internal finish. Like the Heron’s Ghyll archetype, this jacket needed to be unflappable, armorial, shell-like, almost. So we sandwiched pocket bags between two layers of the same linen fabric, which explains the working title for this style: “the double layer linen jacket.”
